Family Therapy

In the 1950s, psychiatrists working with schizophrenic patients observed that therapy was more successful when other family members were involved in the treatment.

In the context of bicultural families, family therapy is an opportunity to visualize the unspoken conflicts through methods such as family constellations. All family members are treated as equals, regardless of gender or status.

During therapy, all family members will have the opportunity to talk about their perspectives on conflicts, how they are perpetuated, and how they affect the dynamics in the family. Methods and therapeutic tools such as circular questions will reveal the complexity and diversity of the symptoms. When the family dynamic is revealed, all family members have the opportunity to change their behavior, which in turn changes the behavior of others.

I recommend working with the genogram when the identity of the family needs to be strengthened because of the different cultural backgrounds of the parents.
